A Whole New Way to Garden!

Join the GROW Local South Texas Learning Garden Team as we continue to learn about our favorite no-till method of gardening: Hugelkulture beds! We’ll build a hugelkulture bed from the ground up so prepare yourself for some hands-on learning.

By creating a core of wood and other biomass, the hugelkulture bed retains water much more efficiently than traditional raised beds.

Hugelkulture (HOO-gul-culture), German for hill culture or hill mound, is a permaculture bed-building technique that you’re about to hear a lot about. Why? Because it works! And it’s catching on across the country. Hugelkulture beds are not only a great way to build a fertile planting area, but they are space saving and water efficient.

It’s a simple concept: Mound logs, branches, leaves, grass clippings, straw, cardboard, manure, compost or whatever other biomass you have available, top with soil and plant your veggies. There are simple guidelines and different ways to build them. We’ll go over it all while we build a new bed together.

Join us for this FREE GROW Local South Texas educational event. Find out why Hugelkulture is a wonderful method for growing in cold temps!
