This Wednesday, we are celebrating our last Downtown Farmers’ Market of 2017 with The Holiday Awakens, complete with live Stormtroopers, a Star Wars art project, Santa Claus, and $5 Kids’ Veggie Vouchers. Don’t forget, this is the last opportunity to take advantage of the holiday vendors until this time next year. What better way wrap up 2017?
This year has been a great one, filled with great accomplishments and even greater people. GROW celebrated its 5th birthday this past March, and there are more vendors and activities than ever before at the Downtown Farmers’ Market. This summer, we hosted The Food Bank’s Chef Showdown, where chefs used their mastery of local produce to raise funds for the Food Bank. In August, as you all know, Hurricane Harvey came through the Coastal Bend, leaving destruction everywhere it reached. Many of our local farmers suffered and our post-Harvey farmers market had a limited amount of food items. Yet, the community pulled together and farmers from the valley donated food and bread to be sold, with all of the proceeds went to local farmer recovery efforts. In October, the Harvest Party was a blast, bringing lots of people together at the Art Center with games, prizes, and local food. December started with the Holiday Markets, and ushered in the first snowfall since the founding of GROW Local South Texas.
Throughout the year we have partnered with a large number of non-profits and local businesses to bring more education, outreach and community to The Downtown Farmers’ Market than ever before. We expanded the number and types of vendors this year, especially our variety of meat vendors. We hope to attract even more producers in 2018 and will be holding our Annual Producers Conference on January 25, 2018 to help GROW more growers in our area (check our website for more details).
We hope you all have happy holidays, and we will see y’all soon.
